1. What is yerba mate tea?
Mate tea is a so-called Ilex plant and is therefore related to our Guayusa tea plant and the Yaupon plant that grows in North America. Yerba mate, on the other hand, like guayusa, also grows in South America. Mainly in the countries of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru. Mate tea is valued by locals for its invigorating effect.
The yerba mate leaves are prepared as a tea, which is drunk differently than we know in this country for herbal or fruit teas. Mate tea is traditionally drunk in a gourd with a so-called bombilla . Bombilla is a straw that has a sieve at one end. The gourd is a hollowed out and dried gourd.
The gourd is mostly filled with mate and the straw is placed in the middle. Then only a sip of hot water is added so that the bottom part of the bombilla is covered. Until the mate no longer has any taste or effect, alternate drinking and adding new water.
2. What are the ingredients of mate tea?
The effect of mate tea can be traced back to its active ingredients. In our " stimulant comparison " you will find the world's best-known caffeinated beverages, their ingredients and active ingredients, including their effect on our body.
The mate tea effect is mainly caused by the active ingredients caffeine , all kinds of polyphenols , some theobromine and some theophylline . If you would like to learn more about the effects of the individual active ingredients, click on the relevant active ingredient or read a comprehensive summary here .
In addition, mate tea also contains minerals and vitamins such as B1, B3 and C.
3. Mate tea taste - How does mate tea taste?
Although there are not as many varieties of yerba mate as there are of green tea and black tea, mate tea does not always taste the same. Just like with Guayusa, it depends on the cultivation, processing, preparation, age of the leaves and of course the variety.
However, mate tea is usually always bitter in taste, even when brewed as a tea and not in a bombilla.
3.1. Traditional mate tea taste
the most drunk mate is the mate traditionally dried over fire or smoke. It has the typical smoky aroma, both in smell and taste. If the mate is actually dried over a fire, as is customary in South America, the well-known polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH for short) can occur. These PAHs are known to cause cancer , with esophageal cancer being particularly common.
3.2. Green Mate or RAW Mate taste
The taste of a "RAW" green mate is very different from the traditional one. The smoky aroma is completely absent and the taste is much sweeter. Like our Guayusa tea, the green mate is gently dried over hot air. The green mate is similar to our PURE Guayusa taste, but with a strong bitter note it is still very typical mate tea.
4. How does mate tea work?
The mate tea effect is generally stimulating, but significantly different than that of coffee, green tea or guayusa. You can find our caffeine comparison here.
The difference in the effect of all caffeinated drinks is always due to the different compositions of the ingredients. In the case of Mate, in addition to caffeine, the main effects are polyphenols and antioxidants in general.
So how does mate tea work differently? Basically it can be said that mate is weaker than z. B. coffee, which is due to the lower caffeine content. This is just 1.4% for mate tea.
Depending on how it is prepared, the effect of mate tea can also be significantly stronger than with normal coffee. Traditionally drinking from a bombilla releases a large amount of caffeine in one fell swoop, which can cause heart palpitations, stomach problems and jitters - just like coffee.
If the mate tea is brewed like a herbal tea, a feeling of wakefulness is created, which has a slightly focusing and stimulating effect. Nevertheless, the mate tea effect is felt strongly in the cardiovascular system, which is why mate tea is not really an alternative for people who have problems with coffee. Here Guayusa would be the better choice.
Mate tea has an alkaline effect and can therefore be drunk without any problems if it is a green mate. If you want to be on the safe side, you'd better go for the older brother Guayusa .
Then we would like to go into more detail about the individual effects of mate tea.
4.1. Mate tea effect caffeine
Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Therefore, if you were to consume pure caffeine in excessive amounts, you could die of a heart collapse. However, this requires an incredibly high amount of well over 1g of caffeine .
Since mate tea contains only approx. 1.4% caffeine, the effect on the body is only strong when drinking it traditionally. What many people don't know is that cold drinks like Club-Mate contain almost no mate at all, but rather extracted coffee caffeine. The taste comes from aromatic substances.
Caffeine, in general, also reduces the production of the hormone melatonin, keeping our minds alert.
4.2. Mate tea effect slimming
Yes, mate tea can help you lose weight thanks to its active ingredients and effects. However, mate tea will not work magic for you and let the pounds tumble on the sofa! However, what the effect can achieve is that,
- your metabolism is boosted
- your feeling of hunger and cravings is reduced,
- and your energy level is increased during exercise.
The mate tea effect for losing weight is therefore rather a beneficial property that you can use for yourself, like Guayusa tea, to successfully reach your goal. However, don't let any company persuade you that their mate tea, mate powder or even capsules will help you lose pounds while you sleep - there is no evidence of this!
4.3. Mate tea effect blood pressure
Mate tea contains theobromine , this active ingredient has a blood pressure-lowering effect. It relaxes and widens the blood vessels. However, this property only occurs with low consumption, not with all-day consumption, as is common in South America. If the mate tea effect is to have a lowering effect on your blood pressure, you should only enjoy mate tea in moderation.
Constant drinking would reverse the effects and lead to tachycardia and tremors due to the caffeine. With a traditional mate, it could also lead to stomach problems.
4.4. Mate tea effect skin
The positive effect of mate tea on the skin is due to the ingredients. Magnesium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, the aforementioned vitamins, antioxidants and even caffeine have a beneficial effect on the skin.
However, it is not enough to drink mate tea. In order to have the effect on the skin, mate must also be applied to the skin. There are now various manufacturers who offer cosmetic products with mate extract.
It is important to know that mate tea has significantly fewer antioxidants than green tea and almost none compared to guayusa tea. You can find a comparison HERE . The mate tea effect on the skin of finished mate cosmetic products is therefore more imaginary than real.
5. Yerba Mate Benefits
The benefits of yerba mate tea are certainly one reason for the widespread use of the South American drink. Mate tea wakes you up, and that is usually more pleasant than coffee, it contains some positive active ingredients and, as long as it is a green mate, it is well tolerated. With low consumption, the mate tea effect has a lowering effect on blood pressure.
A RAW Mate has no carcinogenic PAHs and has a milder taste. Mate tea contains many tannins, which is a disadvantage in terms of taste, but an advantage for the skin and for stomach problems.
6. Mate Tea VS Matcha Tea
Matcha tea, many do not know, is green tea that is shaded for a few weeks before harvest. Matcha tea is therefore not quite as bitter as normal green tea.
Both teas, matcha and mate tea, still contain a lot of tannins, which are reflected in an extremely bitter taste.
Matcha tea has a caffeine content of between 1.8% and 4.4%, while mate tea has a caffeine content of just 1-2%. Also read our detailed comparison of different natural caffeinated drinks .
Matcha tea has significantly more antioxidants than mate and the fact that you drink the ground leaves and not just the tea has an additional positive effect.
Both plants grow monocultures and are therefore a considerable stress factor for our environment.
The effect of both teas is difficult to compare. Basically, matcha is described as a little more focussing but also calming than mate tea, which has a more stimulating and stronger effect on the body than the mind.
7. Mate Tea VS Guayusa
Guayusa is related to yerba mate tea. Both come from South America, but Guayusa grows 99% only in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. The cultivation of Guayusa takes place exclusively in forest gardens, which protect the rainforest from deforestation and preserve biodiversity. Yerba mate, on the other hand, is rarely found in environmentally friendly forest gardens. Cultivation mostly takes place in monocultures, which are miserable for the environment and wildlife.
The Guayusa tea effect differs greatly from the Mate tea effect, since Guayusa contains caffeine, theobromine, theophylline and significantly more antioxidants as well as L-theanine. This active ingredient ensures that Guayusa is awake, which promotes concentration. This focus is accompanied by a long and very comfortable waking state.
Like mate tea, guayusa has an alkaline effect, provided it has not been dried over fire, and is therefore very pleasant even on an empty stomach.
Guayusa tea does not taste bitter even after a long brewing time and can be prepared in a variety of ways . With Guayusa, even coffee-like drinks such as cappuccino, latte, cold brew, ice brew and espresso are possible.
8. Conclusion Mate tea effect
The effects of mate tea are definitely on the more pleasant side of caffeinated drinks. In addition, the mate tea effect stimulates the metabolism and can thus help you lose weight. The tea lowers blood pressure, has an alkaline effect and has a positive effect on the skin if the leaves are actually used as a face mask.
However, mate tea has some major weaknesses. These include the PAH, which can be carcinogenic, the bitter taste that takes a lot of getting used to, and the effect on the cardiovascular system, which can quickly lead to tachycardia and tremors if you drink too much.
However, the effect can generally be described as pleasant and a cup of mate tea will definitely not hurt.
When buying mate tea, we recommend paying particular attention to its origin. We only know of one manufacturer in Germany who knows exactly where his mate comes from, how it is grown and what the working conditions are like for the farmers.
Of course, we would be particularly happy about a combination with Guayusa tea. Guayusa has about twice as much caffeine as mate tea and still does not have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system. In addition to our 100% organic Guayusa varieties, you will also find mixtures for more variety in our shop . We look forward to your visit and hope this post has helped you.
