Natural Biohacking - The natural revolution of the healthcare system

B iohacking is a growing phenomenon in the health world and describes much more than just a “healthy lifestyle”. In this article you will learn what is really behind this new trend and how you can use certain biohacking techniques for both your performance and mindfulness in an ever faster world.


If we take a closer look at the term, we quickly notice a combination of two English words: “bio(logy)” and “hacking”.


...represents your body. The word biology is made up of two ancient Greek words: "bios" means "life" and "logos" is "talk about something". So biology is "talking about life". I go even further by involving the different bodies - the physical, the emotional and the mental body.


...can have many meanings, some of which can also have negative connotations, since a certain aggressiveness resonates in many minds. Often people think that you harm your body in order to achieve certain goals. When we go into the computing world, “to hack” means nothing but invade or penetrate. A hacker penetrates a system with the intention of understanding it better and adapting it according to his ideas, which in his definition is to be considered neutral.

By my definition, a biohacker is trying to understand his body better, to penetrate it with his consciousness and to experience certain parts of this system more intensively. As a biohacker, I pursue goals similar to those of a computer hacker:

  • an upgrade or an update (update) of my system to the latest version
  • Abbreviations, simplifications of certain processes
  • Better and/or optimized functionality of software (emotional/mental body) and hardware (physical body)

In order to be able to carry out these updates, I need in-depth knowledge about my body and its processes. On the other hand, certain technologies to understand this knowledge and make the respective adjustments.


Why another differentiation in the sense of “natural” biohacking?

Unfortunately, biohacking is still often first associated with the so-called “quantified self” movement. The main thing is to measure your body and mind down to the smallest detail. Often there is even talk of the use of micro- or nanochips, which advocate tracking and self-monitoring in what I consider to be a rather unnatural setting.

With Natural Biohacking I want to go back to the roots of self-awareness, just as primitive people, shamans and native people have been doing for thousands of years. And above all, biohacking should bring us more to ourselves, more into the body and re-activate our love for it. Our top belief “I am not enough” should not be confirmed any more. However, I would like to include technological progress, as it is just as much a part of our development as humans as the wisdom of Mother Nature and the indigenous peoples. So why not combine the two and enjoy the optimal benefits of both worlds?

So the Natural Biohacker doesn't just drink water because he has read that 2 to 3 liters a day is healthy (healthy lifestyle). He questions what role does water play in my biology and which water supports my body best. So, as a biohacker, I don't just drink a glass of tap water, but carbon-filtered or even distilled water, which is naturally swirled, pH-optimized and mixed with biological Himalayan salt.

You see what I'm getting at. Natural biohackers are the modern nerds in the field of health, wellness and optimal performance. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to rush to the nearest library and flip through every book on health, nutrition, and physical and mental fitness.


In the beginning, like a child, you explore new paths with curiosity and learn to understand your body better. The goal is not to blindly adopt any routine, technique, or biohack just because it works for someone else. Rather, you become a student again and learn to listen more to your physical, mental and emotional signals - so you train your intuition. This will gradually give you a clear picture of your current state, but you will also analyze your target state and thus know where this path of self-awareness may lead you.

Tools that can help you:

  • Journaling (writing a diary)
  • Tracking & self-monitoring (e.g. through smart wear, fit trackers, apps)
  • Working with coaches, trainers or mentors

So if you know the destination, i.e. your goals, plans and visions, it is time to discover the map. The course is set, next the crew must be fit and ready and have enough fuel.



You sleep poorly, can't get out of bed in the morning, and have multiple energy dips throughout the day that trigger unhealthy behaviors and mood swings.


You want to find out why you sleep so badly and after tracking your sleep with an app (e.g. Sleep Cycle) you notice that your sleep times are very irregular and the quality of the sleep phases suffers as a result.


You will learn what it takes to improve the quality of your sleep and work with a coach on specific routines that promote your sleep and improve your energy balance.


Together you will develop a strategy and work with certain biohacks that will help you fall asleep better and help you train your sleep discipline. Such biohacks could range from supplementation strategies, meditation to adjustments in your diet and emotional management.

Since you are probably now eager to get started with “Natural Biohacking”, I would like to end with a few simple but very effective biohacks. I'm a big fan of the so-called KISS strategy.
Keep It Stupid & Simple

Because the biohacks with the greatest leverage are often hidden in your everyday life and disguised as easy and even mostly free adaptations in your daily routines and rituals. How you live a day is how you spend your whole life. So make sure that you continuously expand your performance on a daily basis and that you are constantly learning.

Since yoga and other conscious forms of movement have arrived in the mainstream of society, breathing has also experienced more attention again. Every minute our body breathes 12-20 times without us even having to think about it. But how often do we use the breath as a tool to calm down or be more active, to influence our heart rate to make better decisions in our lives?

Action Steps: Use this simple Navy Seal breathing technique to boost focus and mental health - the Box Breath, or 4-Square Breath.

Simply breathe in for 4 seconds, then hold your breath for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, and hold your breath for another 4 seconds. Repeat this cycle 4 to 10 times to experience positive benefits like lower blood pressure, increased clarity or even deep relaxation.


Now comes the biohack that you will sooner or later become addicted to. That's exactly what happened to me and many people I've worked with and supported. Because by turning the shower on cold, you give your entire system a huge party. But at the bar there are no cocktails with alcohol but with neurotransmitters such as the feel-good hormone dopamine, hormones such as testosterone or adiponectin, which promotes fat burning. Cold showers or, for advanced biohackers, ice baths also promote recovery, sleep, and managing your emotions.

Tip: Combine deep breathing and cold training to amplify the positive effects and also bulletproof your immune system to stay strong, happy and healthy for as long as possible.


Do you wake up in the morning and often feel little or no feeling of hunger? Or do you sometimes think, after a productive day, that you could do just fine without dinner? Then simply leave out one of the two and avoid the snack in between. This allows your body to have a longer fasting phase. Through the process of autophagy, you help him to clean his cells, improve sugar and fat metabolism and thus prevent diseases. Not to be confused with dieting, intermittent fasting is a natural process that our ancestors went through regularly when food was scarce.
