Is Guayusa a tea? - Impressions of the "Berlin Tea Festival" 2019

2018 found the first Berlin Tea Festival takes place and is thus the first major tea event in Germany. Other European countries such as the Czech Republic and Italy have been organizing extensive tea-related events for years. Berlin is no longer lagging behind!

Over 50 exhibitors, over 30 lectures & workshops and over 1000 visitors from all over Europe came together to present and taste a wide variety of teas, to give lectures and to recharge your batteries and relax together.

The idea behind the "Berlin Tea Festival"

This can best be expressed in the words of the organizers:

" It is important to us to make tea a topic! Because we are firmly convinced that tea is much more than just a drink. "

Whoever drinks tea knows that a change is taking place, not only in oneself but also in the world. Maybe it's because of the plants, the loving preparation or being together. What is certain is that this change is positive. And this year again, many curious tea beginners and long-established tea connoisseurs made their way to Berlin to celebrate tea in all its facets together.

2019 Berlin Tea Festival - What was new?

In 2018, the Tea Festival took place for the first time in Berlin for one day. Accompanied by numerous smaller events throughout Berlin (Berlin Tea Week), it ended like this year with a large fair in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Kreuzberg.

This year, for the first time, a specialist event took place the day before. Topics were, for example, stress management, branding and specific lectures by tea associations/clubs.

Is guayusa tea?

An exciting topic that we encounter again and again at trade fairs is the question of whether guayusa is a tea.

So what is "tea"?

Strictly speaking, tea is a watery infusion of the tea tree leaves. When tea is mentioned in literature, in trade, etc., it is always only the leaf of the tea tree (botanical: camelia senensis ). Fruit tea, herbal tea, mate tea and also guayusa tea are therefore not teas, but so-called infusions or infusions. Other European countries have therefore written "infusion" instead of "tea" on their herbal tea packs. For the German, however, everything that is brewed with hot water is a tea and there is no distinction made in the trade either. Only the real insiders make a meticulous distinction here.

We hope that the Berlin Tea Week will start again next year together with the Berlin Tea Festival and that we will then have ours again Guayusa tea present to thousands of visitors.
